Who We Are
The formation of Fire Protection Association of Nigeria (FPAN) dates back to 1978, when a group of persons met to actualize this dream. Prominent among these persons were Messrs A. A. Amosu, D. 0. Aigbogun, R. A. Oduga, Olayinka Lijadu, V. O.I. Nwaokolo, T. 0. Idowu, B. O. Banjo, P. N. Wokocha, B. N. Ugwu, F.O.Apoola, P. Osakwe and Otunba Jas Adekunle. A 3 man Steering Committee Headed by Otunba Jas Adekunle was later constituted to model the Association in Nigeria in line with its contemporaries outside the Country. Their submission led to the formation of FPAN.
Right from its formative stage, the Association had the strong backing and support of the Insurance Industry and the Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) which is the Umbrella Body for all Insurance Companies in Nigeria. It is instructive to note here that the following Insurance Companies played prominent roles in ensuring the formation of FPAN. They include: National Insurance Corporation of Nigeria (NICON), Royal Exchange Assurance Company, The Lion of Africa Insurance Company Limited, Law Union and Rock Insurance Company Limited, Nigeria General Insurance Company Limited and Unity life and Fire Insurance Company Limited. FPAN was Incorporated under the Companies Acts of 1968 as a Company Limited by Guarantee, on 15thSeptember1988.
At the early years of its existence, FPAN activities were overseen by the Nigerian Insurers Association through its Fire Offices Committee (FOC). The First President of FPAN was Mr. Olayinka Lijadu who at that time was the Managing Director of National
Insurance Corporation of Nigeria. Members of the Governing Council of FPAN were drawn from both the Insurance Companies and Manufacturing Companies.
